Guangzhou is more local than Shanghai and more food-driven than most first China itineraries. Come hungry and plan around meals.
The city is spread along the Pearl River. Tianhe is practical; Yuexiu has older texture; Zhujiang New Town is polished.
Summer humidity is serious. In July and August, afternoon plans need shade, metro, or a long lunch.
