Bell Tower / Drum Tower
First-timers and food-focused short stays
350-800 RMB/night; premium rooms near the towers often 900-1,600 RMB, 2026 OTA checks
Good: Central, walkable, near Muslim Quarter
Watch: Busy and noisy at night
Xi'an city hub
Xian works best with early Terracotta Warriors timing and a central base. Plan city wall stays, Muslim Quarter food, metro routes, tickets and costs.
Xi'an is compact compared with Beijing, but the Terracotta Warriors sit outside town and need a real half-day plan.
Stay near the City Wall or Bell Tower for a first visit. A station hotel only makes sense before an early train.
The food is heavy, wheat-based, and excellent when you leave the most crowded snack street corners.
Where to stay
The Bell Tower and South Gate area make the easiest base because most first-time sights radiate from the old city. Budget 220-380 RMB/night for basic chain hotels, 400-800 RMB for comfortable central rooms, and 900 RMB+ for stronger boutique or luxury options.

Good: Modern hotels, parks, evening lights, better cafes
Watch: Less convenient for Muslim Quarter food walks
Transport
Xi'an Xianyang Airport is northwest of the city. Airport metro and buses work, but DiDi is easier with luggage.
| Route | Cost | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to Bell Tower by metro | Around 8-10 RMB, 2026 estimate | 60-80 minutes with transfers |
| Airport to old city by DiDi | 110-180 RMB, 2026 estimate | 45-75 minutes |
| City to Terracotta Warriors | Public bus cheaper; DiDi/private car 160-300 RMB one way, 2026 estimate | 60-90 minutes |
| Airport bus to Bell Tower or rail hubs | Usually around 25-30 RMB, 2026 estimate | 60-90 minutes depending on stops and traffic |
Metro Line 2 is the old-city spine, Line 4 helps with Big Wild Goose Pagoda and North Railway Station, and Line 9 is useful toward Lintong for the Warriors if you prefer public transport. Use DiDi for the Warriors, late dinners, and hotel-to-station luggage moves. Inside the wall, walking and short taxis are often faster than complicated transfers.
What to see
Put the Warriors on their own morning. The rest of Xi'an is best done in loops inside and just outside the wall.

Reserve with passport details when capacity controls apply. Hire an official guide or read before you go; otherwise Pit 1 becomes a photo stop only.

Food
Xi'an food is not delicate. It is bread, lamb, vinegar, chili, noodles, and breakfast shops that open early. Prioritize biangbiang noodles, roujiamo, liangpi, yangrou paomo, hulatang, lamb skewers, and persimmon cakes.

Digital nomads
Xi'an is good for a slower history stay, not for the easiest international work setup. Costs are friendly and the old city is walkable.
Hotel Wi-Fi varies. Cafes around Qujiang, South Gate, Xiaozhai, and newer malls are more comfortable for calls than snack-street areas. Starbucks Reserve-style branches, Manner-style chains, and hotel lobbies are the safer laptop bets; independent cafes can be quiet but may close early.
8,500-15,000 RMB/month for a comfortable stay; 6,000-9,000 RMB is possible with a local apartment outside the core tourist blocks, 2026 estimate
